New program offers local businesses a unique way to help cultivate tomorrow’s workforce

SAN MARCOS – Businesses looking to make a difference with students whom they may eventually hire now have a new way to do just that.

One Business, One Promise is a new program designed to help fund students participating in The San Marcos Promise, a scholarship and career guidance program designed to enhance the lives of students, families and the North San Diego County community. Under this new program, businesses can invest in a local student as they pursue higher education in hopes of eventually securing a meaningful career and being part of the community’s economic fabric. All donations are tax deducible.

“For as little as $1,000 per year, a local business can fund one year’s worth of scholarships for a student participating in The San Marcos Promise,” explained Herbie Smith, executive director of the program. “Businesses can also hand-pick the student who will receive their funding – perhaps someone who is interested in their line of work – and follow their progress as they work towards graduation.”

The program is designed as a win-win for both businesses and students.

“Regional businesses rely on the local workforce to fill their needs, but are often faced with unprepared candidates,” continued Smith. “With One Business, One Promise, we’re collaborating with the business community to develop educated, trained and work-ready young adults for these jobs.”

In addition to monetary support through this program, The San Marcos Promise also welcomes strategic partnerships with businesses who can provide internships, mentoring opportunities, mock interviews or other valuable exposure to the real business world.
